Iran shoots down U.S. military drone

Reuters informs that Iran shot down a U.S. military drone that it said was flying over one of its southern provinces on the Gulf, increasing fears of military conflict as Washington seeks to isolate Tehran over its nuclear and regional activities.

The Guardian writes that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Thursday that they had used a surface to air missile to shoot down what they called a US “spy” drone they claimed was flying in the country’s airspace.

The US military confirmed that one of its unmanned aircraft had been taken down, but said it was in international airspace.

The Telegraph reports that the US military accused Iran last week of firing a missile at another drone that responded to the oil tanker attacks near the Gulf of Oman.

BBC writes that the US military will send an additional 1,000 troops to the Middle East as tensions build with Iran.

Acting Defence Secretary Patrick Shanahan said the deployment was in response to "hostile behaviour" by Iranian forces. Mr Shanahan said the US did "not seek conflict with Iran" but the action had been taken to "ensure the safety and welfare of our military personnel working throughout the region to protect our national interests". He said the military would continue to monitor the situation and make adjustments to troop levels accordingly.
