ACNIS WARNS OF DANGERS FROM BAKU’S NEW “DIPLOMACY OF WAR” IN INTERVIEW WITH AZERBAIJAN’S NEWS.AZ
Yerevan—In an interview with the Azerbaijani News.Az news agency, ACNIS Director Richard Giragosian warned of the dangers to regional security and stability posed by Azerbaijan’s new policy of a “diplomacy of war that “seeks to pressure not only Armenia, but to also exert new pressure on the OSCE and the West” marked by rising tension and escalating attacks along the “line of contact.” Giragosian further stressed that there was “an even greater danger of a return to hostilities and, perhaps, even outright war,” explaining that “what is most likely, however, is not an official declaration of war, but a possible ‘war by accident,’ where limited skirmishes or attacks quickly spiral out of control and trigger a much wider and more serious offensive,” stemming from the “new Azerbaijani policy of using the threat of force as a new policy to increase pressure and express its frustration with the (Karabagh) peace process.”

Giragosian analyzed the events in Tunisia with a focus on the possible lessons for Armenia in terms of the need for political consensus, compromise and dialogue, and the relationship between the authorities and the opposition. ACNIS PROVIDES BRIEFING FOR EU DELEGATION TO ARMENIA
Yerevan—At the invitation of the European Union Delegation to Armenia, Armenian Center for National and International Studies (ACNIS) Director Richard Giragosian provided a briefing on January 18 focusing on “Armenia in 2011,” which offered a two-part analysis of Armenian foreign policy and domestic political and economic reform, followed by an assessment of the outlook for Armenia through the coming year. The briefing was attended by nearly all of the accredited diplomatic missions from the EU member states represented in Armenia. Following the formal briefing, the discussion also centered on threats to regional security and the balance of power, including the danger of hostilities amid escalating tension in the South Caucasus.

Yerevan—Armenian Center for National and International Studies (ACNIS) Director Richard Giragosian joined Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisian and Finnish Ambassador to Armenia Petri Salo as a guest lecturer at a seminar in Tsakhadzor organized by the Yerevan School of Political Studies. Giragosian delivered a lecture entitled “Leveraging Globalization to Forge National Power in Armenia,” that focused on the “imperative for Armenia to craft specific mechanisms, based on its own national needs and capabilities, and to exploit new opportunities offered by globalization in order to forge and bolster national power in Armenia.”
Yerevan—The Armenian Center for National and International Studies (ACNIS) announced on January 12, 2011 the launch of a new “ACNIS Research Resource Project” designed to assist scholars, experts and students by offering access to a newly created digital database of significant documents and materials relevant to Armenia, Nagorno Karabagh, Turkey and the broader South Caucasus region. The new ACNIS digital database, which will be ready after February 1, 2011, consists of a large digital library of important reports, documents and other historical material that has been sorted, categorized and compiled in a searchable, user-friendly format.
